Event Description:
29th Annual Winston Learning Symposium: Child Development in a Digital World

We are excited to have you join us for Winston’s 29th Annual Learning Symposium. For almost three decades, this event has allowed The Winston School San Antonio to extend our reach into the community and positively affect the lives of students from across the South Texas region.

Winston’s programs are dedicated to serving a population of students who have “fallen through the cracks”. Our students are intelligent, talented, and have high potential--they simply learn differently. At our Symposium, you can gain skills and tools that will allow you to positively make an impact on the lives of all children, and specifically those who learn differently.

The Symposium is geared toward parents, teachers, clinicians, therapists, social workers, and anyone else who touches the lives of children. I look forward to seeing you at this exciting event, and hope that the information you gain will have a lasting impact on your ability to transform the lives of young people.

Keynote Lecture: “Growing Up Digital”
Is Living, Learning, and Communicating with Technology Transforming Youth Development?

By Kaveri Subrahmanyam, Ph.D., Cal State LA
Young people are growing up immersed in digital worlds.  Often called digital natives, their technology use has been the source of much optimism but also concern.  Drawing on research conducted at the Children’s Digital Media Center LA (CDMC@LA), Dr. Subrahmanyam will discuss whether living, learning, and communicating with technology is transforming youth development. This presentation will begin with a retrospective look at how we began to study youths’ technology use; then will cover recent work on the implications of learning and communicating with technology.  The presentation will show that digital contexts facilitate new behavior within traditional developmental domains, they present both risks and opportunities, and they may help some youth more than others.
