WHAT: Two hundred children, including youngsters in the Head Start programs of Edgewood and San Antonio independent school districts, will receive free dental care for a year beginning on Dental Home Day, Wednesday, May 25. The dental care will be provided by UT Dentistry faculty and pediatric dentistry residents of the School of Dentistry at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio.

The dental care will be funded through a $25,000 grant to the School of Dentistry from Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children: The foundation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. The AAPD will be kicking off its annual session in San Antonio with Dental Home Day.

The children will receive comprehensive dental care during the year, including dental diagnostic care, preventive dentistry care, restorations and urgent care.

WHY: According to the National Institutes of Health, few groups are more vulnerable to oral health disease than children who come from families with lower incomes or who are part of a minority group. These children are twice as likely to have tooth decay, which can trigger a domino effect of pain, malnutrition, behavior problems, poor school performance and missed school days.

WHEN: 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon on Wednesday, May 25

WHERE: Ricardo Salinas Pediatric Dental Clinic, 630 S. General McMullen Drive

WHO: English and Spanish spokespersons from UT Dentistry and Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children will be available for interviews. Media can video and photograph children who will be receiving dental care at the clinic.

Details: In 2014, the AAPD awarded a five-year, $375,000 grant to UT Dentistry to provide care for nearly 6,000 children annually at the Salinas Clinic. This new $25,000 grant builds on the clinic’s success in providing comprehensive dental care to children whose families can’t afford it, who come from throughout San Antonio.

Dental Home Day is a collaboration between UT Dentistry, the city of San Antonio, Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children, the AAPD and Sunstar America Inc.
